Canine Division

The Sylva Police Department is busy building a first rate canine unit. We are in the process of making some crucial partnerships to help us serve our citizens, as well as, our sister law enforcement agencies to reach our full potential.

If you would you like a demonstration for your group, please email Sergeant Jamie Hyatt at hyatt@sylvapolice.org.

K-9 Kane

The beautiful dog pictured above is K-9 Kane. Kane is a 3-year-old German Sheppard Dog. Kane is currently in training at Ventosa Kennel in Scotland Neck, NC. Kane will be certified in both narcotics detection and tracking. We expect K-9 Kane and his handler to be fully trained and working in our community in a matter of weeks.

K-9 Kyro

The K-9 pictured below is K-9 Kyro. This good looking fella is a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois. Kyro isn’t a full fledged police canine yet, he is currently in training at Ventosa Kennel in Scotland Neck, NC. Kyro will be certified in both narcotics detection and tracking. We expect K-9 Kyro and his handler to be fully trained by June of 2020. There will be much more information as he progresses in his training.

K-9 Don, retired

The Sylva Police Department is grateful for K-9 Don’s contributions to our town. Don’t let this handsome smile fool you, Don helped us catch many a “bad guy” in his time.

Don began to have some health problems and it was recommended that we allow him to retire to assure he enjoys the rest of his life. He is doing well and is enjoying his retirement (see photo below). Don will go to live with his handler from now on..

Thank you for everything K-9 Don!

Stay tuned to see the exciting new developments………
